Grief is the experience of coping with loss. Most of us think of grief as happening in the painful period following the death of a loved one or pet. But grief can accompany any event that disrupts or challenges our sense of normalcy or ourselves. This includes loss of a meaningful relationship, home or community, job or career, financial stability, dream or goal, good health, youth or fertility.
One may also grieve their own loss of life as they prepare for death. People diagnosed with terminal illness often grieve the loss of experiences and things that they can no longer achieve.
Grief can be varied and complex. Everyone grieves in their own way in their own timing, but sometimes, working through grief requires professional help.
If grief is interfering with your ability to live your life or your symptoms have not improved it may be time to reach out to a professional.
